Today’s African #proverb: When the hyena howls, his buttocks are firmly planted against something. A Bemba proverb sent by Victor Sichilongo, Lusaka, Zambia. How do you interpret this proverb? https://bbc.in/2GPUxtW

When you open your mouth to speak be sure what you say is grounded in truth. That’s your only protection.

We also say, when a blind man says be careful, it means they have a leg on a stone. Literally means they can pick it up to hit you.

Well, the foundation of the proverb is rather inaccurate. Spotted Hyenas often contact-call or "howl" while on the move/walking/etc. Sometimes they will contact-call while laying down. So given that, the proverb hasn't much to offer really.

Umumbwe ukulila kuli eko ashintilile amatako. Meaning the corrupt are roaming our streets because politicians who are even more corrupt are protecting them.

“Nyani haoni kundule” is a Swahili proverb (A Monkey does not see it’s Ass) that seems to me to have a hint of what this proverb means.
