Whitney Houston, Celia Cruz (latin queen), Aretha Franklin, (Queen of soul), Ella Fitzgerald (Queen of jazz), Meriam Makeba, Sarah Vaugh, Nina Simone. All of them were/are black skin women. Not everything is about colourism. Hard work, good luck, blessing.

Can u name any in the last 5 years?
-
One of them is Mary J Blige. The question is do we support Ledisi, Jasmine Sullivan, Amara La Negra, SZA, Normandi etc. enough. So they are right there, but some of us don't see them. Where is our focus or the focus of the media? On the names mentioned above.
-
Exactly, we don't see them enough as they don't fit mainstream media. Don't you think they work hard enough or have the same support from their fans?
-
And the answer is ? Let's stay focused, positive, support more and more and work with what we have. Like Danai Gurira said: if we create excellence , it will be responded to no matter our skin colour.

Yes it does, I don't care what anyone says, when a role, or anything that can be filled by a black person comes up, almost immediately lighter skin tones are given a distinct advantage. And really unless you are a blackberry, you shouldn't be talking about this.

A lot of it. Being light (just like being thin) is considered more desirable in most societies nowadays

I think BBC Africa should focus more on urgent and important things that are going on in Africa and less on all these nonsense. People are being killed every where in Africa and you want to have a debate on the colour of the skins of female artist? Get real.

Really life is good when you are lighter skinned toned, you just have to shop up and breathe.
