Funny thing though, big companies that uses GPL licensed code in their commercial products does not seem to understand or give a damn about their obligations to provide the source code for the GPL licensed parts nor crediting the GPL.

If your software is written in the right way and your proprietary code is separated from the GPL parts so you only have to release the source for the GPL licensed componets to stay compliant. It doesn't take so much effort to ensure license compliance.

However if you're neglecting the fact to stay compliant with the GPL, it can get pretty messy afterwards to sort things out. I think http://linux.com released a free ebook about how to stay GPL compliant with commercial products some time ago.
