I learned about that being a slur on accident not too long ago - it REALLY NEEDS to be emphasized more! A lot of people just don’t know because they’ve never been told. (The others who still willingly use it - we feast on people like those. #eattheasshats2020)

Yeah it's incredibly commonly used with so much of the context being erased which is why I always kind of check in with a "hey were you aware that____" rather than "whoa what's up with the slurs there buddy??"

Yup. I dressed up as that stereotype for Hallowe'en when I was seven. Thankfully, I only wore the stereotypical scarves, skirt, and big earrings.(thankfully my parents were not malicious racists). I do not use that slur word today. Also, the word "gyp" is a reference to cheating.

Yes it's incredibly fucked up and I stop people when they try to use those words for cheating/lying around me because holy shit

Genuine question: I'm learning to play the Leonard Cohen song "Famous Blue Raincoat," and one of the lyrics is "Well, I see you there with a rose in your teeth, one more thin g***y thief." Am I obligated to make a substitution? I'm unsure what the protocol is here.

I mean I'm not Roma so i'm not the authority on who to ask. I always change slurs out in songs I am singing though because hearing a slur for yourself out of the blue in a piece of music is jarring and upsetting for me and I assume it is for others.

While we're also at it: -a lot of the cool 'Twitter slang' white people use is appropriated AAVE bc white culture loves to take over Black culture (see also: rock and roll) -Native American / First Nations / indigenous headdresses, clothing, and aesthetics aren't costumes

Fun fact: That slur originated from the mistaken belief that the Roma were from Egypt. So not only is it insulting, but also geographically inaccurate and ignorant. Things I learned playing Assassin’s Creed.

I literally live next to a house, a rather cute little country home with a nice yard that unironically has a giant yard sign that says in scroll font " gy*sy cottage"
I feel like Americans are particularly ignorant on this one. -
They SUPER are
