The #1 cause of startup death is making something no one wants. The #2 cause is spending too much. Those two account for so many deaths that I'm not even sure what #3 is. If you merely make something people want and don't spend too much, you're way ahead.

step 1: kill all innovation with decades of anticapitalist, antitech policies step 2: be sad that the US dominates tech step 3: finance massive top down plans to build a "European cloud" step 4: watch it fail embarrassingly (see the "European Google")

The bigger the pie, the more there is to redistribute as well Technology innovation, if done well, helps do more with less—grows the pie without hurting the environment () Technology innovation is thus a force for good, and we should encourage more of it

It's conceptually possible that VR is 'the next smartphone' - the next universal platform, delivering the metaverse. But it seems more likely to me that VR is the new games console (or even just a subset of that market): deep, immersive and most people don't care at all.

Conclusion from Don Hoffman's "Illusion of Reality": An organism that sees reality as it truly is, is never more fit than an organism of equal complexity that sees none of reality and is just attuned to fitness payoffs. In other words, seeing the truth will make you extinct.

1/ My defense of billionaires: becoming a billionaire is generally tied to creating MANY billions of value for others. The societal contributions of billionaries increase our quality of life MUCH more than their existence decreases our quality of life.

Let’s play a game. I’m going to impersonate an investor in each connected tweet in this thread. See if you can guess who it is. Some of these people are famous and some more obscure.

What's your best argument as to why there needs to be more, not less, VCs? Examples: - More investors, more founders, more growth: - More investor diversity, more founder diversity - More economically aligned & interconnected society

The lack of seed stage venture capital in most cities is crazy to me. Once a company has traction, it can get attention from VCs across the world. But at inception, a lack of local capital makes it very hard to get off the ground. I'm bullish that this will improve in the 2020s.
