I confess I thought one of the points of HDR was to not have to simulate your eye adapting to brightness changes...that HDR had enough range to just let your *actual* eye adjust to brightness

So I'm a bit confused in God of War how when you exit a cave into a beautiful daylit scene, it starts bright but then adjusts downwards to be dark again

It's still a limited range compared to full on linear. Plus it is probably programmed in as an exaggeration of the effect. That's all I can guess on that.

I managed to find a dev blog for gow and they basically do auto exposure by balancing for center area of the screen and then applying some more curves on topic that... I think it is definitely too aggressive...
