I confess I thought one of the points of HDR was to not have to simulate your eye adapting to brightness changes...that HDR had enough range to just let your *actual* eye adjust to brightness

It's still a limited range compared to full on linear. Plus it is probably programmed in as an exaggeration of the effect. That's all I can guess on that.

I managed to find a dev blog for gow and they basically do auto exposure by balancing for center area of the screen and then applying some more curves on topic that... I think it is definitely too aggressive...

There may be a setting in your TV that automatically dims that you could check into.

I thought that because your eye isn’t actually there, it won’t adjust to the extra range provided by HDR? I.e the camera represents your eyes in the scene, so the noticeable adjustment from bright to darker is just simulating what your eyes would do.

That bright bloom and overexposure should be unrelated to HDR. The HDR should allow your display to show those brights and darks on the screen simultaneously.

It is annoying because no matter how I adjust the tv, it will be incorrect as soon as I tilt the camera

HDR is a way to make that easily possible in general without redoing all the graphics & lightning
