I keep trying to put my finger on why it is I don't like Nier: Automata's story. The word that comes to mind is "juvenile", but I'm not sure that's precise enough. It's almost like a child throwing a temper tantrum to get a rise out of you, getting more extreme as it goes
In the end it's like everyone commits suicide or erases their memory or goes revenge crazy because "oh the despair", but it loses impact rather than escalating each time
Yeah the story is weak at face value. I think it plays on the fact that it's weird and despairing. Which I thoroughly enjoyed, I just had to avoid thinking too deeply about the situation being a real situation
It's grandiose and operatic. That's not a criticism, that's why I loved it to pieces. Super interesting to hear that the same reasons it worked for me didn't work for others.
The first nier had a much better story with much better characters. The dad things is nobody played it. Do yourself a favour and play the better game
May I recommend you play the original Nier? I feel like Automata is Yoko Taro's "worst" entry overall.
I don't remember where I gave up. It was just too depressing. I also felt like it was very gray and I was repeating myself.
Sounds just like Drakengard 3 endings.
But ceaselessly subverting expectations to the detriment of the story is everyone's new fetish, I thought.
You might want to check out Taro's Drakengard3. It's a cheaply made janky game (both unintentionally, due to having been made by "Deadly Premonition" developers, and intentionally, as a sort of "Yoko Taro Makes A Trash Movie"/"Anything Goes: The Game"), but at the same time...
...this very "Anything Goes" makes it a game that's both highly entertaining AND extremely curious conceptually. In a sense it's almost a polar opposite of Automata. Although be advised that half the story is contained in 6 (yes, SIX) story DLCs...
