That is sorta how hardware works... everything is 8x8 but then most games just combine 4 8x8s to 16x16 to make creation simpler. But you can still tell that some games use the 8x8s to make more combinations...

Mhmm, I did it partly because of that and to remove special cases in my level importer for half-high tiles. Because Tiled has diagonal flipping available that means the vast majority of my tiles are unnecessary, though. Pretty sure I could clean at least 100 tiles out.
