Would this work: 1. Switch income taxes to sales taxes 2. Since everyone is now taxed equally, we also pay everyone some minimum amount ($10k a year?) to offset the burden on low income households

The last I read on this was everyone was cool with automated with the option to do your own but TurboTax and friends lobby hard to make sure that doesn’t happen
-
They would probably save more by automating than lobbyists could ever hope to spend...but yeah the lobbyist money doesn't go to the IRS

Encourages people not to spend. Does not catch (tax) money made and reinvested. Could lead to international transactions to avoid taxation. Immediate price jump could cripple economy. Application issues (utilities, rents, etc). Flat income more effective than flat sales.

Not trying to be a pain. But I have taught graduate public budgeting classes and know this is far more complex than it seems or should be.

Idk, works pretty well here. I don't remember ever sending in corrections for my taxes, which are calculated by the gov

In the US unfortunately everyone is either afraid the government will use it to track them ...or afraid they will find out about income they didn't report

Everyone wouldn't be taxed equally under that plan. It's a regressive tax.
