here's another one i fell in love with recently- it's a set of unusual modular foliage tiles. these are from Gun-Dec (1991), NES. these have an incredibly well-wrought soft look. they almost fool the eye into thinking they use more than 3 greens.pic.twitter.com/hhKwJGXEoq

here's a wider shot, for context. these do such a fantastic job of creating a dynamic, variegated background which doesn't interfere with readability at all.pic.twitter.com/sh6giZdHWQ

here they are broken down into tiles + quarter tiles. they've really gone all out- i'm amazed at how few times they repeat a single 16x16's worth of data.pic.twitter.com/rVJP3tgkJG

but i think even more noteworthy is how effective they are at creating large dynamics here. the stippling and soft edges are used to great effect in building long gradients.

here's another lovely set of modular tiles from Vice. this city feels so lively and effectively creates such a sense of scale.pic.twitter.com/uOn0eHiYse

here's a detail of some stonework i absolutely loved. this is from dungeons and dragons, shadow over mystara (1996). i adore the palette used, and the way they've evoked the textures of the different materials so well with the shapes and shading approaches used.pic.twitter.com/ubo2M5wh90

and this is one of my favorite brick masonry textures i found recently, from gargoyle's quest II (1992), NES. i love the alternating T and inverted T lost line mortar in the small bricks, and the way they've omitted upper outlines in the larger bricks + left in lower outlines.pic.twitter.com/GxLvH6KlXR

this is perfection. i especially love the parts where the larger brick variant without the white highlight is mixed in with the finer brick variant. the right side of this pillar is incredible as well.pic.twitter.com/lMqpWZV5oy

a recent find. this is from akumajou dracula (1988) which is a bit of a hot mess, but has some amazing high points. i really liked the bristly shattered end of this platform.pic.twitter.com/miR9Xp9YEv

another akumajou dracula find. these modular 8x8 half-bricks are lovingly arranged into numerous different types of 16x8 bricks. the palette here is nice though perhaps these are a bit too bright to separate cleanly? i can't help but love everything else about them, though.pic.twitter.com/70BVkrF7Xa

Looks like it might not be so accessible for those with poor vision...they could probably just darken the wall sprites

yeah it really is a readability concern. i wondered about that as well- especially if you're red-green colorblind.
