For what it's worth I tend to think our fascination with violence is what drives us to play violent games and not vice versa.

I think in the end it makes designing for games without violence more of a fun & interesting challenge. Not as always a 1:1 replacement, but as a completely different avenue for creation.

i think its partly because killing enemies is one of the easiest dynamic game mechanics to design and implement.

Which is why Undertale is fascinating. It takes that expectation, of the mechanics of violence and turns it on its head quite interestingly.

I'm not sure that is the same as finding some completely different way to make it fun... you are still choosing actions from a menu make them leave you alone. I mean I could say all your bullets are love bullets and enemies fall in love rather than die but it'd still be a shmup

I think the "fun" comes from people having some kind of effect on the world. But I don't think it's destructive by default. Games like SimCity are all about creation. Though I do think it is interesting that so many of the games we play do focus on destruction.
