For what it's worth I tend to think our fascination with violence is what drives us to play violent games and not vice versa.

I'm thinking of how Hohokum sort of replaces violence with giving characters a ride on your snake, or Night in the Woods just has lots of good dialogue. But I think by and large a lot of our favorite games wouldn't be fun if you removed violence and didn't try make up for it.

To many, games are synonymous with systems like health, lives, levels, score, winning, opponents, etc. These have value in providing structure and familiarity, however there's so much room for exploration beyond traditional games.
