For what it's worth I tend to think our fascination with violence is what drives us to play violent games and not vice versa.

Still, I can't help but think, isn't it messed up that our favorite games are often violent ones? Even many supposedly nonviolent games like Mario are still at their root about removing opponents from the playing field.

Not all, but many games that remove that element end up feeling too flat and noninteractive. Or else the mechanic is very specific to a certain game.

I'm thinking of how Hohokum sort of replaces violence with giving characters a ride on your snake, or Night in the Woods just has lots of good dialogue. But I think by and large a lot of our favorite games wouldn't be fun if you removed violence and didn't try make up for it.

I think one game that successfully takes Mario and makes it a non-violent challenge is Celeste. A very good platform we from this year. What’s one of your favorite games that is all about getting past obstacles instead of “killing” enemies?

I liked Soma for the most part, but then in that game the NPCs are still quite violent so not sure it counts.

people need to stop blaming everything but human nature, which is really the fucked up part

I think humans are violent by nature, and in our day and age we've created a way to fulfill this without necessarily hurting anyone. And because of that I think violent games are a wondrous creation.

in a way it is messed up but I think we like the violent ones because they appeal to a base instinct which humans still haven't really evolved past (though thankfully most people are satisfied by experiencing the fantasy version as opposed to hurting real living things)

it is, but violence is a simple form of interaction. If there were more games that weren't (as) violent more people would play them, but they're harder to make.
