Perhaps having a switch you could only shoot at diagonally? Because then it's out of reach, so there's only 2 options there.

Hiding some mechanics from the player is something more games should do IMO. Not basic ones though.

Discovering them when playing is always fun. And basics should be explained without text if possible.
