Don't look at it as "keeping it simple". That's complicating something you've already done. Look at it as "how would I do this if I were ungodly lazy?"

Something that doing retro-dev for NES and Genesis really lodged in my brain is to stop writing generic code. Solve the problem you actually have, and make it generic later once you've repeated yourself _several_ times.
