Yes. Go back and play one. It'll explain so much more of the story and how it all mixes together.

I highly doubt it; to me, AC died when it moved away from the Desmond Miles storyline. Even playing all the games up to Unity, my only backstory for the game is that you’re playing as a QA tester at Ubisoft.

The most you’ll get from it is understanding the organizations, technology and general conflict.

Yeah, the first few games have a man named Desmond and Abstergo has him hooked up to the Animus to search through his genetic memory. At some point, I think they killed that storyline.

I would say AC ii / Ezio Trilogy has the most well put together modern day stuff. The modern story ends really abruptly though, and it's been an after though ever since. Some great scenes in there though.

Lotta advice here saying to play there first one, but I think starting well AC 2 is a better use of your time. There's a recap at the start.

For the first few games it's pretty cohesive and works to tell a story, but once you're past AC3 I have no idea what's going on and wish they'd dropped it.

Yes. In fact, that’s what drew me to the series. It only went off the rails when the loudest voices were ones saying “we don’t want the modern day part” and now Ubisoft seems to not know where to take the story. It’s disappointing.
-
Well also the initial plan was to wrap up the story with AC3 to synchronize it with the 2012 end of the Mayan calendar.
