I loved the use of shifting shadows in that game. There were times I swear something shadow-infested was flailing towards me through the twisting, windy woods, only to find it was just a shrub turning in just the right way. Perfect atmosphere in those parts.
At the start of each level in Alan Wake you lose all your inventory and there is no other kind of stat progression, which I think makes it a bit less fun (besides not making any sense narrative wise). I mostly like the story and wish this was more of an Until Dawn style of game.

that and the TERRIBLE facial animation are the two main things that drive me nuts about the game. I'm ok with the narrative being a little wonky as the fiction it pays homage to is pretty similar.
