I didn't look, but probably... the main irritation is the need to replace it at all, not the cost

Can confirm. I helped my dad install 8 of these in his house. 2 malfunctioned within a year. They are also ULTRA sensitive to false positives related to high humidity.

Yeah thr darn thing gets set off when we do laundry (electric dryer so not a gas issue)

I'd recommend Nest Protect. I've only had mine in for 1.5 years, but it's been working great.
