yeah I totally agree, the scariest moments to me are when I think I see something. My imagination is scarier than whats out there. Like, I dunno if Amnesia would work really high res. Whats so upsetting about them is that they're hard to see at all.

That's the thing with the older ps1 and ps2 era Japanese games. They had to find ways to make the most of the limited hardware, and as a result, made scarier visuals due to there ambiguity. The SH fog and the muddy otherworld textures are an example.
