Maybe not that simple, but I do like the idea of further specializing police so that we have units that are trained to solve nonviolent crimes in the least violent way possible. it would put an extra burden in taxpayers, but I'm sure there's a city willing to try this approach.

My wife is a social worker for impoverished communities and at risk Native American youth. Neither her or her coworkers want to carry a gun or being part of law enforcement although they do work along side them at times.
