so i think i want to have optional support for reusing 8x8 sub-tiles in different configurations in this editor. i'm not yet sure exactly how that'll work. probably not just drawing on an 8x8 grid, because that would be tedious and would also not inspire repetition.

afaik actual hardware which does this had a set of 16x16 tiles, which were actually sets of 4 subtiles. so there were no "normal" tiles, the entire background was made up of these assemblies. (tilesets could still have default versions + variation, but that's use, not the tool)

the neat thing about the subtile system is that it inspires creative design of subtiles which can be used as different things in different contexts. for instance the arch tiles here share a subtile with the 16x16 square tiles.pic.twitter.com/LHJGwNTTtX

and this gets even more interesting if you can do palette swaps..

Maybe have a system by default the grid snaps to 16x16 but the underlying graphics are 8x8 tiles, and you have the option to change the snapping if you want to place them in 8x8 increments.

oh so there would be an 8x8 tile editor underneath the 16x16 editor?

that might be more intuitive than what i was thinking... and if you could copy / paste tiles in the 16 x 16 mode (eyedropper could sample a 2x2 subtile arrays) then you'd get some of the craft of using a table of them, without having to set up the table..

Yeah, that is my thought. IIRC from my GBA days the hardware was 8x8 internally and we just used 16x16 in our editor to make it easier? So this would be almost the same with an option to change the "brush" size. Maybe find a way to still have collision in 16x16 if it helps
