So our cleaning lady has been dropped by all but 3 of her clients, and her husband has no work, due to coronavirus. When she gets paid for cleaning, she immediately goes and buys whatever groceries are available. We paid her an advance to help her until the stimulus arrives.
But, although she is a citizen, her husband is *not*, and Because they file taxes jointly, BOTH of them are denied the stimulus. Even though they pay taxes. Her sister, also married to an immigrant, is in the same boat. No jobs, no stimulus, tax-paying Americans.
While it may not help her directly, I just made a large donation to the local food bank for people who find themselves in this very situation. I felt it the right thing to do since my relief money is not needed by my family. I urge others to do the same.
