I think about this often. Like, what are we missing out on because tech evolved the way it did and our imaginations are limited to what exists, rather than the whole spectrum of art...

i think it's less creators and more commercial forces. increasing realism and pushing fidelity lets you sell the idea of incremental progress and therefore the value of your product over previous ones. i feel this strongly shapes the culture of game art.

but i feel like humans are, at heart, wild and inventive. if you let even the most AAA indoctrinated artists make things on their own it won't be long before they make something weird and vital.
