No upgrades. In terms of permanent elements to build off of and fins direction it’s all about that terminal in your ship.

your knowledge is what you permanently upgrade! Once you've discovered all the stuff in the game you can finish from the start in like 15 minutes, most of which is waiting and travel. You unlock 1 ability: to sleep at a campfire (3rd loop).

The ship computer is the one thing that carries over, other than that, only your own knowledge and skills are permanent. Finding shortcuts are the hugest advantage. There's no need for upgrades once you learn to plot out little missions for yourself.

It's like that Tom Cruise movie Edge of Tomorrow. You can explore stuff to increase your knowledge of what things do/where things are, until you understand how to successfully complete the process before the timeloop ends.

I gave up on the Outer Wilds. There was a lot of "what the hell is happening right now?" In that game. I land on a planet, step out, and suddenly the island I landed on is submerged in water and I'm being launched into space.

Nothing like that to be found. The story is the only upgrade. It didnt work out for me.

It's more like The Witness in that insight is the real upgrade.
