So I was thinking today about sequels, and the sort of philosophy behind them that's driving Axiom Verge 2, and decided I'd try talking about it in a twitter thread.

And that's the philosophy behind the changes, for better or for worse. Thanks for listening.

Sid Meier's 1/3 old, 1/3 new, 1/3 improved is a good balance. I also felt that Zelda double'd down in the wrong aspect of Ocarina of Time in the next games until they radically changed the approach (for the better) in BotW.

I like when sequels give me more of what I enjoyed, keep things fresh with new story and locations (FarCry, FallOut), but best sequels reimagine the game in a big way, but keep the connection through characters. (BotW, GOW)

You hit the mail on the head here when you said that both the new game and the old game should be worth playing. What a fantastic philosophy that is!
