So I was thinking today about sequels, and the sort of philosophy behind them that's driving Axiom Verge 2, and decided I'd try talking about it in a twitter thread.

So my challenge was to try and make the game different enough that it's worth playing the new game *and* the old one, and try to grow it and find out what things make it better, without it being totally alienating or making it suck.

And that's the philosophy behind the changes, for better or for worse. Thanks for listening.

Disagree prime games too similar. It's a trilogy so there has to be similarties but tbh I hated prime 2 and 3

I loved all 3 Prime games but they dont hold a candle to the side scrolling games. Too many dev's get caught up in trying to chase trends, fads, etc. Dragon Quest got it right, right up until XI. If you want to go in a different direction...make an all new IP.

Interesting you bring up Twilight Princess being so similar to OoT... it followed Wind Waker which was (in some ways) radically different and extremely divisive, many loved it fiercely but many hated it, so Nintendo basically backpedalled and made a much more ‘traditional’ Zelda?

Zelda 2 is my favorite Zelda game Tom. I also love Simons Quest and of course SOTN but I am also grateful those weren't permanent changes in those franchises. If it ain't broke. That said...I cant wait for Trace's next adventure...its already long overdue. ;)

That’s why I don’t really like Twilight Princess. I feel like most of the mainline Zeldas have their own identity and tried different things, but TP was just catering to the crowd who didn’t like the Wonderful Wind Waker.
