Because its a lot more work to make an electric car than just swapping out a gas engine for an electric one. Transmission is totally different, weight balancing will be way different, power curves will be totally different. Simply put, its a TON of work.
For a brief period after the iphone release, phone makers still tried to compete with janky semi-smart phone things instead of just going along with the same formula. I kinda feel this way about gasoline cars. Like why does the mid-engine corvette ... still have an engine.

New Corvette has been in design a long time, its not like they just kicked this thing out in the past year. Some electric issues werent solved when they started and getting to a mid engine platform was likely more important than getting to an electric platform.
