The first of the new tomb raider games did tons of work on subtitle content and presentation but was a one size fits all solution.. some people loved it, some hated it, there's a range of use cases for subtitles

So if you had subtitles locked to 46px @ 1080p that would be too big for some people's preferences and too small for some people's needs

The 46 is a bit complex - it actually was actually defined by limited choice of line heights for teletext services on SDTVs as that was what TV subs were originally delivered through, then translated up to HD and other delivery mechanisms...

...but people generally seem to get well on with it, and it lines up perfectly with recommendations on what percentage of your field vision should be taken up by text on road signs, which similarly are only seen for a short period with other visuals competing for attention.

But there is always human and situational variance to take into account. Level of visual acuity, screen size, viewing distance etc. So I'd look at 46px as being your minimum maximum - configurable size that goes up to -at least- 46px@1080.

BBC's guidelines are based on percentage of screensize + a modifier based on screen size, that comes out as something in the 50s I think

Hi! I don’t know about road sign text size. BBC research shows on most devices a line height of 8% of video height works as a max, and offer a range of smaller sizes too. For small mobiles 8% might not be enough. https://bbc.github.io/gaad/how_big_should_subtitles_be/index.html …

I was asking about the history stuff :) Refers to font size, IIRC there are guidelines from lots of industries, from lecture theatres to signage, the measures are in arc minutes but translate to around 46px @ 1080p on 40" screen @ 10 feet. Which is a one size fits...

Ah, sorry I didn’t get that. Yes, current size standards come out of using double height teletext lines. 24 lines -> 12 double height lines in an underspecified height, usually 90% of video height. Ends up with line height ~8%, font size ~6.7% of video height.

Okay so for 240p it would be about 16 px fonts with 19-20 px line height?
