context: a twip is 1/20th of a pixel, it's how swf files store positions, my engine originally just kept them this way but it's starting to get annoying so I'm just having it kill off all the twips at load time and just use floats like a normal graphics system should

vb6 used twips too! 1/20pt and then people just went 'points are pixels why not'. what a nightmare

i guess the idea was to make stuff dpi independent but was anything ever really dpi independent

i think it was just them trying to do fixed precision... but 1/20 is such a weird division there. its also possible they have some lookup table shit going on for antialiasing lines or whatever

either way it's annoying. I didn't originally forsee myself accessing geometric data so much so I just left them as twips but these days I have divide and multiplies by 20 fucking everywhere, and I just want that gone

boy take a seat around the campfire and let me tell you stories about the horrors that live inside the swf file format specification. horrors such as "read 3 bits, add 2 to that then read that many more bits"

if i recall right even once they released the swf spec, parts of it were just wrong or missing and you had to reverse engineer it anyway and the complexity is part of why it had so many security holes
