To me it’s biased journalist or looking for clickbait headline, anyone can see Gears 5 is a quality game, so maybe it’s not for reviewer than give to someone who loves 3P action game so it gets it’s just & fair in the review. 7.5/8 is commendable but a 6 is laughable.

So the 10 point scale for you is really a 5 point scale (1-6 = bad, 7 = ok, 8 = good, 9 = great, 10 = must have)?

Exactly

So the 10 point score should be done away with, because most reviewers I know think of a 60 as a 3 out of 5. It’s not like in school grades where everything under 60 is a failing grade.

You could reduce it even further if you then go, well, if 60 is bad, it may as well be zero. And so on and so forth until the review snake eats its own tail

‘Tis true, could just do a recommend or don’t recommend scoring system. Several publications have switched to that.

It’s a tough one. Only the biggest publications seem to be able to get away with it.

Yeah. Scoring can be so subjective, like why is it an 8.8 instead of a 9? What really makes .02 difference for a title? A uniform scoring policy would just help readers and reviewers.

I know a lot of reviewers who use the .5 to compensate for the fact that they aren’t really allowed to use all 10 points on the scale without definite misunderstanding. 6 = 1, 6.5 = 2, 7 = 3, and so on.

That is really interesting... like logically 5.5 should be like an average game. But also there are so many good games that you may never want to bother with such a game, and it might as well be a 0?

Yeah it boils down to the fact that when game reviews really started establishing themselves as powerful parts of the industry, games were marketed almost exclusively to kids, and to kids in school, a 60 = a D-. Only Gamepro escaped this with their signature "feeling" scalepic.twitter.com/8OY2Hz92yu
