side note I've read up on pure ECS a bunch and watched the blizzard GDC talk about it and I still don't really get the point of it vs having components with logic and data together

yeah. in terms of the non pure version, I have found so much benefit from using that (even for stuff where all the enemies behave differently) that I'm never going back to inheritance trees

God I wish I understood programming mumbo jumbo. At least I can have fun watching some of my fav devs look cool by understanding eachother
