I was waiting for the double jump and when it turned out to be a high jump I was really happy, everyone does double jump, the high/long jump was cool. It felt like you had to master the jump a little than a double jump.

Entirely dependant on the game, of course. I would have preferred double jump over the trenchcoat only in cases where I had to teleport upwards. The game was not designed to make you feel like a double jump was missing, and frankly I liked learning how to use a different method

Is it a cop-out to say that AV was pretty damn perfect to me and I didn’t wish for or need anything that wasn’t in it to complete it?
-
Not imo. I think you're pretty dead on. That said, Bloodstained is pretty damned great as well.

Double jump is always great but I honestly never thought about it once while playing AV.

But yes it would be. Better. Not instead though just a late game extra jump.

I haven't read the article yet (sounds like a fun read though) but generally, being able to course correct, have longer air time, and generally having a larger margin for platforming, can all lead to less frustration in games, and more fun. As for Axiom Verge -

Playing Axiom Verge I definitely recall missing platforms, or battling enemies that I need the extra air time to shoot at. A double jump would have helped to recover and given more freedom in certain battles, especially boss battles.
