I know I’m like 2 days late to the party, but this sounds like some kind of synth, with someone tweaking the filter cutoff as they play. That, or some kind of woodwind-ish thing using a mute of some sort. My money would be on a synth, though...

I'm guessing synthesizer has been ruled out? Maybe a type of woodwind through a processor? Or an ewi, which is an electronic woodwind.

It could be a few things, but based on the attack and sustain, I'd guess some sort of keyboard/synth running through an envelope filter?
