Are you using the low level API or the studio API? Bank files are for fmod studio, which is a piece of software geared towards sound designers, in which they have a nice interface and a lot of resources to author sound events. If you need any help hit me up! my DMs are open

we use fmod heavily on our project! most of my experience with it is with the fmod studio API/unity integration but I'd be happy to try and answer any specific questions. .banks are the sample banks generated by Studio, .fsbs are the banks generated by Designer (their older tool)

As far as best practices banks are just a collection of samples to make organizing loading/unloading easier. My game is an arcadey mobile game so I just have 1 bank that is loaded on startup, but other ppl might do http://Level2Sounds.bank or something
