Yeah, lots of thoughts here. 1) I agree, rubber-banding is pretty inelegant, and heavy handed. I would try to avoid it. I'm also sure it's ok in some cases. Narrative set-piece designed or scripted moments perhaps?

2) This is not a racing game thing. In fact we've all played the boss fight that was unwinnable until after some reveal. The racing example is siman easy one to make and visualize, thats fine. I can talk all day about dynamic difficulty and i promise not to bring up racing games
