NI's Kontakt Player? It just depends on if your VST instrument(s) is/are compatible with it. It's free, lightweight, and loads quickly in my experience.
AUDIO people: Is there a sound editor (in the vein of Soundforge, audacity, wavelab) that will load VST instruments? This way I don't have to load up a whole DAW just to play the 1 note I need to make a sound effect.

one solution is to use a standalone vst, and use soundflower or any system to record the audio output of the standalone in your audio editor.

Yeah...I'm thinking for workflow that I might be better off just loading the DAW and using its not-so-great waveform editing features than using the editor and having to loading 2 other apps

It's another DAW, and you may well already be using it, but Reaper is very lightweight DAW. Loads all but instantly.
