Interesting how reviewers of RDR2 are critical of how Rockstar overworked its employees while also seeming to decry how the controls haven't improved or how the NPC behavior isn't realistic enough. As a dev this kind of criticism makes me feel I need to work *more*, not less.

I can understand that feeling at the visceral level, but inside that hides the assumption that non stop crunch on games is how you get more work done, when there's a pretty good argument that it burns out employees and is the death of joyful and creative game design

Yea! You don't need crunch to know you don't switch the "hello" button while on foot to be, "jump on strangle and throw someone off a wagon", while you're on horseback. Although perhaps if they weren't exhausted from being overworked they would have realized this.

Could they allocate their resources better?

For controls, seems like that should be a top priority before the mountain of extra stuff they added.

Maybe they were just working very hard on the wrong things. It happens all the time!

Or maybe if they took more time away from the game, maybe had time to relax and play some other games, they'd notice the things that need work instead of just being used to them.

Haha yep. Don't overwork the employees. And also make better games. And also make them faster. And also hire more people. But also make your games personal- not soulless. And also be innovative and take more risk. But also I don't care about that weird game your making.

And also only charge $59.99 for all of that.

It's more about Rockstar not simplify their controls and not developing out their normal structure. Since they haven't really created anything outside open world games, they've limited themselves to paint by the number design.
