I saw two episodes of it... one where there is a ghost fly they have to kill and another where it was a dream and the character kept exploding. Is that fairly representative of the show?

The ghost fly is definitely not one of the best episodes. The other one is mid-range. It also changes a lot over the years. The lead character is 12 when it starts, so its much more sweet, fast paced and wacky then.
