At some point @CNN started auto playing embedded videos with sound, which is inconvenient pretty much always... is there a way to disable it?

As mentioned above, if using chrome right click tab and mute site. (You will need to unmute site to listen to any videos you do want watch)

On mobile though it inevitably makes a sound that disturbs everyone around me until I can scramble to turn it off

@AxiomVerge I use a Chrome plugin called "Disable HTML5 Autoplay," which basically takes away these privileges from every site. By default it blocks every site from playing video or audio, then I disable it on sites where I want it. (You can also click to play, but not always.)Thanks.
