How do folks feel about the UI being a different resolution than the game? It would open the door to more fonts (particularly for languages where you have to make fonts huge to be readable) but is it too much of a cringe factor to have this juxtaposed with pixelated art

        Celeste does this beautifully, IMO

Readability is king in my books. Helping accessibility too.

Maybe give the user the option. That way if you like it keep it. If not use the retro look.

I'd say if you're doing a pixel art game it looks weird. It's a matter of taste really and for me personally it looks weird. Kinda depends on what kind of pixel art style you're going for though. Maybe it works better for "modern" pixel games?

personally bugs the hell out of me, it bothered me with celeste a fair bit. But its by no means a deal breaker, if a game is good a game is good. And its still not as bad as some of the font choices you see japan pick for english.

Depends on the execution, but my personal rule is that the HUD should be 1:1 pixel ratio or higher. If the HUD is a higher res than the game window, it can look goofy, whereas if the HUD res is lower than the game window, it can still look fine. Especially retro-style games.

I was also thinking maybe use 1:1 for western fonts and then high res anti-aliased just for asian fonts. Just hate having two different systems if I can help it
