Was definitely thinking this throughout Top Gun: Maverick, but then again, George Lucas took pretty much all of the big mission sequences from The Dambusters so...
Still, it was glaring but proves the point we just want rehashes of what we already like

I liked Top Gun 2, amazing aerial sequences! Fun movie! But hard for me to rave about it beyond that.

It really made me appreciate the whole 'magic in a bottle' of the first one and especially the texture of it — the feel of time and place etc. This was much more sterile. Life is more sterile now. So it's not really a failure but a key comparative, regardless.

Star Wars transitions between scenes are usually goofy though. The comparison is too top level simplistic.
