I'm kinda sick of online game journalism tbh Hyperscape getting a 6 on Gamespot because the game just released and doesn't have a full fleshed out story and the guy couldn't learn the map in the 8 hours that he played of it over the last 2 months

Definitely be sick of it. Thanks to schedule cram, you often barely get to investigate a lot of the "new title" set. Get in, crank out a few games, put review up before traffic bleeds off into spaces that published faster(not necessarily better). Okay articles up, review for...

Ah, excellent, we have a hardware review now. Unfortunately it's not a great product, but if I say that they'll stop sending us things altogether and my bosses wont like that. So now time to figure out how to toe the line between "dont get mad" and "dont buy this"

This is 100% why I appreciate people like LTT and GamersNexus for their tech reviews. It's always an honest opinion with both the good and bad

Some people get a little more wiggle room than others. Point being: yes, be sick of it. Theres a reason my streamteam command has "*recovering* games journalist". But the system itself doesnt really lean towards good content in general. Leans towards fast content.

all of this
Poor guy probably said, "Why don't we cover Hyperscape?"
Editor kicked down, claiming it wouldn't get clicks (since Open Beta was a bigger deal), and gave them an afternoon to play, and a few days to write a review before pushing them onto something else.2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -

Every day/week it's not about good coverage, it's about "how many clicks can we get with these stories team!" I remember being in rooms pitching stories and just hearing, "Well, that won't get traffic Nick - so no. You can't cover it."

And if I pushed to cover it? I would be spoken to if the traffic wasn't up to standard.

I think one of the biggest hits to me was Bloodborne/Dark Souls coverage, which somehow pulled in so much traffic that I was told I could "cover it however I wanted" but that I just should crank our more From content.

My weapon guides? "Best Weapons in XYZ" They kicked so much ass that I was told do more of this. But, when I wrote a review for Dark Souls 3's DLC & Bloodborne's DLC? They under performed click wise so much I was advised not to do long form again. Lists only.
