I focused on playing it a little safer, covering topics on a small scale and building up based on the contacts I made from my content. Even then, when I was working full-time, it wasn't enough for a sustainable environment.

At the moment, whether journalism organizations or content creation companies will admit it or not, freelancers are cheaper clicks which can be used to churn out content - all on the promise they'll 'one day be good enough to join a staff'. But hey, that's just my experience.
