Very impressed with Poda NR Bulgaria, stuffed with raptors, Bearded Tits, 2 species of Pelican etc. Great demonstration of how much wildlife can squeeze into a small wetland on city edge, aided by larger Burgas Lakes complex. Must be even better in spring and great tourist site

This Snipe’s camouflage is not as good as it thinks it is

Passing through Northern Greece it would’ve been rude not to stop at Lake Kerkini and visit the famous Dalmatian Pelicans. Only had time for one quick boat trip but had ludicrous views of one bird. Always a spectacular species due to its size but even better close-up!

Red-breasted Geese mixed in with White-fronts in NE Bulgaria this weekend. We were very fortunate to arrive the same day that the flock arrived from Romania, they moved south the next day! c400 Red-breasts with 10,000 WFs, low numbers in this mild winter

Next ship contract starts in New Zealand in late feb, planning on flying via Hokkaido for snow eagles and cranes! Any other birders going to be there around then and fancy splitting costs. Any tips for independent birding there greatly appreciated also

I said no more penguin photos from Antarctica. Fortunately for the penguin lovers amongst you, we stopped at the Falkland Islands yesterday and visited a King Penguin rookery. By far the most colourful of the family

We’ve crossed back over Drake Passage now so these are my final penguin photos from Antarctica: Gentoos in the snow at Yankee Harbour and Chinstraps resting on an iceberg at Point Wild

A ridiculously inquisitive Leopard Seal contemplating if I would be a tasty supplement to its usual diet of penguin meat. My 100-400mm was slight overkill in this situation

Here’s some Adelie Penguins from the frozen Weddell Sea to lighten your twitter feed today. They take the title for the most adorably idiotic penguin species, it’s a very crowded field in that competition. If they don’t cheer you up, nothing will!

🚨EMPEROR PENGUIN!!🚨Ice conditions allowed us to make an unscheduled and unusual visit to the Wedell Sea yesterday. After an awesome day of landing zodiacs on the fast ice, we got incredibly lucky with a rare encounter with this most enigmatic, beautiful and hard to see bird

What an absolute privilege to see my first Antarctic penguins over the last few days. Chinstrap and Gentoo by the most frequently seen here on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula

Nice selection of good-looking wildfowl at Punta Arenas today amongst a bunch of new birds for me: Spectacled Teal, Red Shoveler, Upland Goose and Chiloe Wigeon

Sailing down the Chilean Coast now with an almost constant escort of stunning Black-browed Albatrosses. Check out that eye-liner!

I liked the colour match of the eyes of this Black-crowned Night Heron and the hull of the fishing boat in the background. Iquique, Chile today

I was surprised to find this (my first) Markham’s Storm Petrel bobbing around in Iquique harbour, Chile and receiving some unwelcome attention from gulls. Managed to catch it, dry it off and help it into the air and watch it fly out to sea 😁

Twitter, as 2019 draws to a close I’d love to see your nominations for the best facial adornments in the natural world. My favourite is the Inca Tern from the Pacific Coast of South America. Do you have a species that can beat this finery? Pls RT
