My woodland walk near Canada Farm, Shapwick this morning gave me 2 Woodcock, 3 singing Mistle Thrushes and both Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker (photo of a male), but no sign of any hoped for Redpolls or Siskins.

This spinning shoveler pair aren't practising their synchronised swimming routine! They swim in tight circles like this to sift the water with their large bills, filtering out food- much in the same way blue whales filter plankton! Wow!

Couldn’t find the Am Wigeon in careful search 11:00 to 12:30 from hide thro’ thousands of duck on Noah's Lake. 2 Whooper Swans still, also 2 Egyptian Geese, 87 Pintail, 3 Grt W Egrets & 2 Marsh Harriers. Distant photo of geese on roof of Island Tin Shed – a roof first for me 🤪

When spotting the pintail in winter, look out for the long tail feathers that characterise it. This dabbling duck feeds at the water's surface, rather than diving for food. They eat plant matter, supplementing this with insects & molluscs in the breeding season.

I don't often see a perched Marsh Harrier. This one was a little far off but in beautiful light and I'm pleased with how it's come out.

Work is continuing on replacing the Waltons Viewing Screens. Most of the of the work on the first screen is now complete and the team have begun to take down a second screen. This means only one screen open at the moment - the first screen on the left on the way to Tor View Hide.
