Omg this is timely! I went to a ‘creative’ aerial class on Mon, which was about expressing ‘emotions’. It was REALLY uncomfortable, as I was struggling to ‘think’ of anything. But I think it’ll be good for me....

My counsellor pointed out its probably not about ‘thinking’, but feeling things, and that it might be a good way to try and reconnect.

As it happens I just wrote a comprehensive post on alexithymia! https://twitter.com/EmbraceASD/status/1221936677830242305?s=19 … I was working on including treatments as well, but the article was becoming too long. So a post on alexithymia treatments (and a post on the alexithymic brain) is coming soon!

Any kind of movement therapy would support that, including dance. Check out “somatic therapy” - Van der Kolk talks about it in relation to trauma in The Body Keeps the Score.

I second somatic therapy. ISTDP also shows promise, with an efficacy of 84%. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intensive_short-term_dynamic_psychotherapy …

I had a regular talk therapist who did this kind of thing (sitting on a couch in an office) and I believe she called it body work. Idk if that helps.

Like I'd talk about whatever intense emotional thing I was preoccupied with and she'd ask me how I felt in a standard therapist way, and then she'd also ask me about what physical sensations I was feeling. Like, I'm really sad, ok, my shoulders are tight, my throat hurts, etc.

There’s good evidence for deep tissue massage, mindfulness, dance, yoga etc helping resolve this in people with developmental trauma. Being autistic means that some aspect of those activities is inaccessible. I don’t know of any studies specifically targetting autistic ppl
-
Developmental trauma incidentally is as much about structural brain differences as other types of neurodiversity but you don’t see it come up often. I personally write, about the physical sensation only at first. Patterns that connect it to a feeling come later
