It’s fascinating how many of the brilliant founders I talk to found a way to sidestep the traditional education system in order to accelerate learning while saving face socially. The personality types that do that seem to do that well seem to map well to that of being a founder.

19-year old me to my parents: “Dad, I’ve decided to dropout.” “And do what?” “Move to SF. We got funding from YC.” I would have still made the move with or without yc but yc made the conversation and the mental anxiety on parents 10x lighter.

How do these founders “save face socially”? Is it by joining Y Combinator or starting their own company?

Mostly YC, IMO. A lot (most?) of the value in attending a college/university comes from the fact that well-regarded people gave you their stamp of approval. YC scratches that itch as well.
