It’s so weird to me that we see 24-year-olds in certain careers and consider that as static/permanent, but if you’re 18 sure become whatever the hell you want

Well, 18 year olds are given the time and space and social approval to intensively study a topic up to a certain standard.

Can’t 25 year olds do the same thing?

You can do it at any age, but if one considers human life-cycles and present social patterns the most stress-free period of learning is childhood to very early adulthood.

Just to clarify, I think the opportunity your are giving people through @LambdaSchool is a very good one. I was merely trying to speak of some variables which express why, to me, certain things are easier to accomplish in certain phases of life.

The early growth mindset is often perceived as immature playfulness or exploratory phase. As we grow older, having growth mindset is often construed as fickle mindedness & lack of purpose or direction. I disagree with both.

Socialization is a powerful thing. The vast majority of us are in postmodern, information age career trajectories but we were all socialized to believe if you haven't decided what you want to do for the rest of your life by 24 you're screwed.

This is one of the reasons I think Lambda School is so impactful - it opens up avenues for people to change the course of their career, when grad school would otherwise require a long list of prerequisites or a degree

IMHO part of that is due to the sunk cost fallacy. People think because they spent 4+ years on a B.S., plus experience in a field they decide they hate, people wrongly assume it would set them back another 4+ years to switch fields.

What is the difference in hours per day available to learn new skills once you have to work full time and maintain a household. That is basically the whole difference.

And the social pressure tends to get even more suffocating the further away from young adulthood you are. This misguided notion is part of why I decided to never decide on what I want to be when I grow up.

This conversation with Jack Ma really opened my eyes to the way young people view job security. He argues we need to teach "soft skills", too. Would love to hear your thoughts.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQCF3PtAaSg …

Most people I know have encouraged my non-linear career path, which has lead to exciting places. I think the most important thing is about the skills you learn along the way and your ability to apply them to your life.
