I’m looking for books about people who lived through the fall of socialist and/or communist governments and the contrast between those times. Send recommendations!

I know you said books but I was reminded of this great movie called The Lives of Others. Also, the book The Reader (not the movie).

They Thought They Were Free: The Germans 1933-45. Interviews with normal German people who had identified as Nazis and how the country cane to accept fascism. Great read, imo

check out Nobel laureate Herta Mueller's books, inspired by her experience as teacher in Romania during the communist regime, harassed by the secret police and forced to flee country in 1987. see brief guide to her work here:https://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/oct/08/herta-muller-nobel-prize-literature …

My undergrad thesis was on the impact of the fall of the Soviet Union on the Russian oil industry. Not people-specific, but happy to send along that bib. My advisor was a specialist in the field and his page has some interesting links (and retro gifs!) http://www.personal.psu.edu/i04/372readings.htm …

“Secondhand Time,” the oral history by Svetlana Alexievich, is a world-class source. Not analysis, but for people’s stories, extraordinarily rich.
